Early, Priority or Final: When Should You Apply to TFAS?

You’re sold on a summer interning, studying and networking in D.C. Now for the real question: when do you hit submit? Short answer: apply at the earliest deadline you can make with a complete, genuinely good application.

The Summer 2027 Application Deadlines

Three deadlines, one program. Pick the one that matches where your application is right now.

EarlyNovember 5Your transcript and materials are ready this fall
PriorityJanuary 8You need fall-semester grades or more time to polish
FInalFebruary 8You found TFAS late or you’re waiting on a document

Applying from outside the U.S. and need a J-1 visa? You’re on the International Student Deadline: Thursday, October 8, 2026. If you’re an international student already studying at a U.S. school, you can generally use the regular deadlines above.

Rolling admissions: you don’t have to wait for a deadline

TFAS reviews applications as they come in, not in one big pile after the final deadline. Once your application is complete, you can generally expect a decision within three weeks, starting after the early deadline. Scholarship decisions land at the same time as admissions decisions.

Why applying earlier pays off:

  • More scholarship money is available at the start of the cycle.
  • More spots are open, so your odds of getting in are better.
  • You hear back sooner, on both admission and scholarships.
  • You can start the internship hiring process earlier, before competitive positions fill.

Apply by the early or priority deadline and you get priority consideration for admission, scholarships and internship hiring.

Hitting “submit” isn’t the whole deadline

You can submit your online application any time in the cycle. But to count for the early, priority or final deadline, two things have to be true:

  1. Your online application is submitted by 11:59 p.m. ET on the deadline.
  2. Every required supporting material, including your official transcript, has been received by that date.

Mailed something? It has to arrive, not just get postmarked, by the deadline. Your application doesn’t go to the admissions committee until everything is in.

Application Status: You can check what’s arrived in your application portal at any time. Heads up: there can be a short lag between TFAS receiving your transcript and it showing up in your portal.

So, which deadline should you pick?

Go early (November 5) if

Your transcript is ready, your essays, resume and writing sample are solid, and you want the most time to plan your summer. Don’t rush just to be first, though. A strong application by the priority deadline beats a rushed one by the early deadline.

Go priority (January 8) if

You’re waiting on fall-semester grades or want more time to level up your application. It’s a popular pick, and it still gets you priority consideration for admission, scholarships and internship hiring.

Go final (February 8) if

You just found out about TFAS or you’re still waiting on a required document. The final deadline is a real deadline, not a “too late” signal. The tradeoffs: fewer spots, less scholarship funding, less time to prepare, and a later start on internship hiring.

If your application is already complete, there’s no upside to sitting on it until February. Submit it when it’s ready.

First-year? Your grades set your timeline

TFAS needs a college transcript showing grades from your first completed semester before it can review your application. If those grades won’t be posted by November 5, the priority deadline is probably your move.

Many first-years do exactly that: wait for fall grades to post, request the transcript, and submit the application and transcript together by January 8. You still get priority consideration, and you have far more breathing room than the final deadline gives you.

Transcript not here yet? Don’t panic

You don’t have to submit your application and your transcript at the same time. TFAS matches them up as they arrive. But your application isn’t reviewed until your official transcript and every other required material is in, and everything has to be received by the deadline you’re aiming for.

  • Track it. Check your application portal for what’s arrived.
  • Request it early. Give your school time to process and send it.
  • Send it the right way. Electronic transcripts must come directly from your school or its official transcript service to transcripts@TFAS.org.

Bottom line

The best deadline is the earliest one you’re actually ready for. You can start your application now, save your progress and come back to it. Just make sure the application is submitted and your transcript(s) arrive by the deadline you choose.

Your application is strong, your official transcript is available and you want the most time to make decisions and prepare for the summer.
