How has your TFAS Summer impacted you, professionally and/or personally?

👀 Finding My Way
I came into TFAS excited to grow intellectually by learning more about economics, government and politics — areas I do not routinely study as a journalism student but wanted exposure to. This summer has helped me discover what I do and do not want to do after graduation and has sharpened my personal goals. Narrowing my career path was my biggest takeaway. I now have exciting opportunities for my upcoming semester in Boston and beyond that, which simply would not exist without my TFAS summer.

What was the most interesting thing you did at your internship?

🏃🏻‍♀️ Racing to the Deadlines
The day-to-day hustle of producing a daily news commentary podcast under a late-morning deadline was the most interesting part. It can be a grind, but you learn as you go. I also enjoyed learning from my boss and his co-host (both industry veterans) as they unpacked the day’s main news stories and shared their analyses.

What did you like most about living in Washington, D.C.?

🎂 Happy 250, America!
I already live near D.C., but I chose to live in the city for the experience, and I do not regret it. America 250 made this summer in D.C. extra special. I remember walking with a friend late at night after going to the gym and spontaneously encountering a light show at the Washington Monument. Late-night adventures, like this example, are worth it… despite having to wake up early the next day! Simple activities like jogging along the Potomac River, scootering through the city by Lime or attending Mass at a local church also add to the D.C. experience.

How did this experience change the way you show up in professional spaces?

❤️‍🔥 Heart of Courage
This experience reinforced the value of having courage in professional spaces and constantly asking yourself how you can add value to others. Sometimes, that means listening instead of talking. Other times, you might have a burning question that others in the room could benefit from — so ask it.

What advice do you have for future TFAS students?

🙂‍↕️ Know your “Why”
Have a “why” for doing this program. TFAS is well worth the investment, particularly if you come in proactive. Be professional, don’t complain, serve others, and work hard. Learn from your mistakes and stay positive. And, as Dr. Anne Bradley said, have intellectual humility. (Also, definitely read “I, Pencil”)!
