How has your TFAS Summer impacted you, professionally and/or personally?
👀 Going Behind-the-Scenes
My TFAS Summer changed and challenged me in ways I never anticipated. I came in with a clear view of what I wanted this summer. Each briefing, site visit, and mentor meeting confirmed my passion for national security while giving me firsthand exposure to the behind-the-scenes work in Washington, D.C.
This summer, TFAS was about more than developing professional skills; it was about finding the confidence to step outside of my comfort zone, expand my network and pursue a career I’m truly passionate about.
What was the most interesting thing you did at your internship?
📝 Research & New Perspectives
One of the most interesting aspects of my internship was conducting research under the esteemed faculty and staff at the National Defense University while participating in the Reserve Components National Security Course (RCNSC). The course focused on strategic competition and exposed me to the strategic and tactical challenges facing the United States and its allies.
I had the incredible opportunity to engage with guest speakers, NDU staff and fellow students who are accomplished professionals in their respective fields. Every conversation offered a new perspective and valuable insight. These are experiences I will carry with me long after my TFAS Summer is complete.
What did you like most about living in Washington, D.C.?
✨ Opportunity & Exploration
There’s truly no place like Washington, D.C. As someone who grew up as a military kid, D.C. felt both familiar and exciting at the same time. There is nothing quite like living in a walkable city with Metro and countless amenities nearby. The museums tell the story of our nation’s history, and every Lime scooter ride takes you somewhere you never thought you’d discover. It is a city full of opportunity and exploration.
How did this experience change the way you show up in professional spaces?
📓 Back to Basics
During my time in D.C., I learned the value of carrying a notebook with me and taking handwritten notes. There is nothing more disrespectful than pulling out your phone in the middle of a coffee chat or a roundtable discussion with an esteemed guest. Taking notes demonstrates initiative, engagement and respect for the conversation. It shows your peers, colleagues and supervisors that you pay attention, remember important information and value the conversation taking place. It may seem like a small habit, but it made a world of difference for me. I’m so glad I have my notebook to look back on.
What advice do you have for future TFAS students?
🙂↕️ Yes, Please!
Say yes to everything! Attend every opportunity you can, even when you’re tired or nervous. The summer will be busy, and you will learn more about yourself than you ever thought possible. You’ll experience an incredible amount of personal growth. You will be tired from exploring a new city, working full-time and balancing all of the opportunities TFAS has to offer. Sometimes you’ll be invited to a networking event that feels intimidating or asked to introduce yourself to people you’ve never met before, but always say yes. That networking event you’re nervous to attend, or the Lime scooter ride around the National Mall with a group of people you just met, could completely change the trajectory of your summer.
