D.C. Neighborhoods to Know

One of the best parts about living in D.C. is how different each neighborhood feels. You can grab coffee on a quiet, tree-lined street in the morning, explore museums in the afternoon and end the night out in a completely different part of the city all within a few Metro stops.

Here’s your go-to guide to some of the best neighborhoods in and around D.C., from where to eat and hang out – spots TFAS staff know and love.

🏠 Foggy Bottom

Your home for the next 8 weeks! Foggy Bottom is one of D.C.’s most conveniently located neighborhoods, sitting right between the National Mall, Georgetown and the Potomac River. Think walkable, scenic and easy access to some of D.C.’s most iconic spots.

🕺 Dupont Circle / AdMo

Best known for being the home of TFAS HQ (jokes!), Dupont Circle and Adams Morgan (AdMo) are where D.C.’s social life really comes alive. Whether you’re looking for a laid-back café, a lively dinner spot, or a late-night dance floor, this area has something going on at almost any hour. Dupont leans a bit more polished and classic D.C., while AdMo brings the energy with a more eclectic, nightlife-heavy vibe.

Highlights

  • Dupont Circle – the central park area is perfect for people watching, reading, or meeting up with friends. On weekends, you’ll usually find a farmers’ market and plenty of street musicians
  • Nightlife in Adams Morgan – 18th Street is lined with bars, lounges, and late-night food spots. It’s one of the best places in the city to go out, especially on weekends

⚾️ Navy Yard

Navy Yard is one of D.C.’s fastest-growing neighborhoods, known for its sleek waterfront, new restaurants and Nationals Park. It’s a go-to spot in the summer, whether you’re catching a baseball game, grabbing drinks by the river or just hanging out in one of the many outdoor spaces.

🌶️ Columbia Heights

Columbia Heights is located in Northwest D.C., next to Adams Morgan and above Logan Circle. Close to TFAS headquarters and accessible on the green or yellow metro lines, Columbia Heights is best known for its international food options!

  • Thip Khao, a Laotian restaurant near the Columbia Heights metro stop, is regularly a top-rated spot in the D.C. area, and Pho Viet is a great option for pho lovers.
  • There are also several Ethiopian options, including Letena, Eatopia, and Dukem.
  • And for all the Latin food lovers, Judy’s on 14th Street has the best pupusas, and Xelaju Bakery is great for Cuban coffee.

While all these great places are accessible from the metro or on foot, it’s best to exercise caution when walking in this neighborhood at night, and it’s not recommended to travel here alone.

🌅 BONUS: Arlington, VA (Claredon)

Although it’s not D.C. proper, it’s kinda like D.C.’s little brother! Since you will be taking classes on the VA side of the Potomac, you should get to know the area – here’s a start!
