About TFAS

U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao speaks to the 2004 summer institutes' graduates.

The Fund for American Studies (TFAS) was founded in 1967 to help instill in young people an appreciation for the American form of government and the free enterprise system. TFAS sponsors Institutes that teach college students about the principles and values upon which the United States was founded.

The following Institutes are held in Washington, D.C. in partnership with Georgetown University:

Summer Institutes:

Fall and Spring Semesters:

  • Capital Semester
For students looking to spend their fall or spring semester gaining public policy experience in our nation's capital while studying at Georgetown University.

Each Institute offers classroom study, internships, and special events. The summer Institutes have a combined enrollment of 330 and the semester enrollment is approximately 40. Students in the summer are housed together at Georgetown University while the Capital Semester students live in furnished residential buildings located on Capitol Hill.

Other programs sponsored by TFAS include an Institute in the Czech Republic for students from Central and Eastern European countries, an Institute in Greece for students from the Eastern Mediterranean region, an Institute in Hong Kong for students from countries in Asia, and a week-long Institute in Prague which brings together both working journalists and student journalists from Europe.
