Application Instructions & Deadlines
Because applications are reviewed and accepted on a rolling basis, we encourage you to apply as early as possible. Those who apply early will receive first consideration for both admission and scholarship decisions as well as internship placement. Many internship placements are very competitive, so the earlier you are admitted, the greater your chance of receiving a top internship placement.
February 12, 2019: Priority Application Deadline for Scholarships
March 12, 2019: Final Application Deadline
To qualify for a deadline, you must submit the online application form by 11:59PM eastern time on the deadline. All supporting materials must also be received by the deadline.
All applicants are required to complete the online application available by clicking here. In addition to the online application, there are supplemental materials that must be sent via mail, email or fax using the contact information below. Please keep in mind that your application will not be passed on to the Admissions Committee for review until all of the required materials have been received.
All programs require an official transcript, letter of recommendation and a $25 application fee. Please see below for the application checklist.

All participants must view and sign The Fund for American Studies program policies upon enrollment. This includes the Attendance Agreement that is included in the online enrollment form as well as a code of conduct agreement upon their arrival. Please click on the link below to view the policies for the summer undergraduate programs, including terms of final payment, refunds, withdrawals and student participation.
Costs & Scholarships
Students enrolled in a summer undergraduate program are required to take the three-credit core class associated with their program. Participants in the 8-week programs may opt to enroll in one or two elective courses, earning either six or nine credits in total. Course descriptions may be found in the Academics section of each program page.
Participants may also choose between two housing options. Please view the housing section of the program pages for descriptions of the accommodations.
3-Credit Option: Includes tuition and housing in District House - Affinity Units (8 weeks): $7,750
6-Credit Option: Includes tuition and housing in District House - Affinity Units (8 weeks): $8,950
9-Credit Option: Includes tuition and housing in District House - Affinity Units (8 weeks): $10,150
**A deposit of $750 is due three weeks after acceptance. The remainder of the tuition balance is due April 1.
Optional Premium housing in District House - Studio Double: $440
Estimate of living costs (actual costs will vary and are not included in the program costs):
Books and supplies: $200
Food: $1,000 (depending on personal preferences)
Transportation around Washington: $350 (Metro train and bus fare)
Personal expenses: $250 (Entertainment, etc.)
Transportation to Washington: Based on distance from Washington and type of travel
The Fund for American Studies strives to make its programs accessible and affordable to the best and brightest students regardless of financial status. Scholarship funding is awarded based on a combination of factors including:
- Financial Need
- Academic Excellence
- Extracurricular Achievement
- Leadership Activities
Approximately 70% of students receive scholarship funding through TFAS. Our scholarships for the summer undergraduate programs typically range from $500 to $4,500.
If you would like to apply for a scholarship, please plan to submit your scholarship materials at the time of application submission. The following materials must be submitted through your online application, mail, email (email@example.com) or fax (202.318.0441):
- A 250-word statement explaining your need for a scholarship. (Must be uploaded into your online application through the application system)
- Federal Student Aid Report (SAR) or Tax Return
- Financial Aid Award Summary & Grant/Scholarship Award Letter (if applicable)
