IPJ intern Stephanie May edits video package for PBS’ Nightly Business Report.

IPJ students have the opportunity to intern at a variety of media outlets, public relations firms and nonprofit organizations.

Past Intern Experiences:

  • Gannett News Service
    Tristan Hallman was treated as a full time reporter with Gannett News Service Washington Bureau. He covered hearings and press conferences on Capitol Hill. He covered a White House ceremony honoring the WNBA Camps, The Phoenix Mercury for the Arizona Republic. While juggling many assignments he wrote an insightful article on lobbying by public colleges in Montana.
  • Politics Magazine
    As an intern with one of Washington’s premier political magazines, intern Anna Chambers wrote articles and Blog Posting for the “Campaign Insiders” section of the website. She also covered a conference on “The Art of Political Campaigning.”
  • National Journal’s Almanac of American Politics
    Sonia Mugabo's primary responsibilities at her internship were researching the congressional delegations from various states and compiling information about them.
  • New York Times
    Cal Colgan served as a research assistant for a New York Times reporter. He compiled daily research reports - most mornings by 9:30 am. He also reviewed countless Freedom of Information Act requests documents for an ongoing investigative project.
  • Voice of America
    Utilizing her Chinese language skills, Natalie Dickson from the University of Mississippi had many great opportunities. These included research, editing, audio and video production, script writing and general assignment reporting.
  • American Institute for Cancer Research
    As an Intern in AICR’s communication and education departments, Kathryn Dusold did a combination of research, writing, fact checking, online work, and layout and design. Her supervisor commended her for her work on a long term project that will help AICR’s press outreach in the coming months.
  • Hearst Newspapers
    Interns Amanda DeGroff, Dana Amihere, Alex DeCosta, Chelsea Hackney, and Lilliana Ostivoyskaya, wrote stories for numerous Hearst newspapers, including The Houston Chronicle, The Albany Times Union, Greenwich Times, and The San Francisco Chronicle. Their offices were located in the U.S. Capitol Building. DeGroff had top bragging rights when she had the unbelievable experience of having an off the record conversation with President Barack Obama.
  • Federal News Radio
    IPJ Interns, Meg Beasley and Rachel Stevens wrote dozens of articles for WFED, Federal News Radio’s website. With the federal government as their beat, these two reporters covered a wide range of agencies: The State Department, The Department of Homeland Security, and Veteran Affairs to name just a few.
  • American Valor Magazine
    Jacob Kanclerz was given a long term assignment to work on for the summer. His project was an in-depth multi-media look at the OSS-The Office of Strategic Services, the precursor organization the CIA.
  • Catholic News Service
    Interning with a news service that supplies news and features stories to hundreds of Catholic newspapers across the United States offered many unique opportunities for intern Felix Rivera. In addition to covering hearings on Capitol Hill, Felix covered issues from bioethics to the effects of video game violence on teenagers.
  • WTOP News Radio
    Interning at Washington DC’s only 24/7 news radio station was the chance of a lifetime for intern Brent Scher. He was assigned to work exclusively on national security issues with award winning journalist J.J. Green.
  • Privacy Times Newsletter
    Max D’Onofrio was able to utilize his research and reporting skills. With an emphasis in online reporting Max worked for the leading newsletter that covers credit, privacy & Freedom of Information Law and policy.
