Internships
Overview
IPJ student Nick Ballasy with CNN Anchor Wolf Blitzer

For approximately thirty-five hours a week, students intern with a
Washington media organization. Internship sites include print and broadcast
media outlets, news services, internet publications, public relations firms, Capitol Hill press offices, and advocacy organizations. The IPJ staff will match
students with an internship that best meets their interests and level
of skill. A Student may arrange his or her own internship if it meets the requirements
of the Institute.
The internships provide students with a first-hand look
at the world of Washington journalism and corporate and nonprofit public relations. Students who plan on seeking
a broadcast journalism internship are encouraged to apply early,
as these internships are very competitive and often need to be secured by January.
Intern responsibilities vary, but often include:
- Covering congressional hearings
- Drafting articles for publication
- Editing and producing news stories
- Researching
- Writing press releases
- Assisting with media relations
- General administrative office work
Internships are matched with students based on the needs of internship sites and on the student’s skills and experience as expressed on their resume. Students are asked to complete a detailed internship questionnaire upon enrollment which will help Institute Staff facilitate the placement process.
“I was able to hit the ground running at my internship; this helped me to sharpen my writing, interviewing, and time management skills.”
