Students intern for approximately 30 hours per week. Prior to the program, the Institute staff works to match the student with an internship from among the many organizations with which TFAS has relationships.
The staff does its utmost to place students in internships that best meet their skills, experience, and interests, as well as the needs of the internship sites.
The internships provide students with a first-hand look at the workings of the U.S. economy and political system. Washington is the home to over 40,000 summer interns, so students are encouraged to complete their applications early due to the competitive nature of Washington, D.C. internships.
ICPES intern sites are very diverse including Congressional offices, political organizations, international policy groups, think tanks, embassies and law firms. Intern duties often include:
- Attending congressional hearings
- Conducting research
- Coordinating events
- Managing databases
- Writing reports for publication
- General administrative work
Students may arrange their own internship if it meets the requirements of the Institute and has been approved by the Institute staff. If there is a specific organization with which a participant would like to intern, it is best to contact that office directly.
ICPES places students at many government agencies Jonathan Khouri interned at the US Department of Justice.
