CAA Fellowship

Council of American Ambassadors Fellowship

In conjunction with The Fund for American Studies, the Council of American Ambassadors (CAA) awards a full scholarship to 6 undergraduate students with an interest in international affairs to intern, study and live in Washington, DC for the summer. CAA is a nonprofit association of currently serving and retired United States ambassadors.

CAA Fellows participate in a challenging, yet rewarding program that enhances overall understanding of U.S. foreign policy planning and execution as well as helps to solidify career goals with respect to international affairs.

Program Components:

  • Mentoring by former U.S. Ambassadors.
  • Practical training through internships at the Department of State.
  • Enrollment in the Engalitcheff Institute on Comparative Political Economic Systems (ICPES) which includes two academic courses worth 6 credit hours at Georgetown University as well as weekly guest lectures with leaders in public policy and international affairs.
  • Residential housing on Georgetown University’s campus.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Confirmed internship with the Department of State.
  • A strong interest in a career in the field of international affairs.
  • Completion of junior year of undergraduate study.
  • Demonstration of a high level of excellence in academics and leadership in extra-curricular activities.
  • Competency in at least one foreign language.
  • Study or travel abroad experience.

Application Process:

  • Via email (council@americanambassadors.org), submit an essay (500 word limit) to the Council of American Ambassadors on the following topic: “Discuss the reasons why you wish to pursue a career in international affairs.” Include a cover note of no more than one paragraph.
  • Complete the ICPES online application form, which includes:
    • Current resume
    • Topical Essay, which must cover an international issue (750 word limit)*
    • Statement of Purpose - Please note: The CAA essay on why you wish to pursue a career in International Affairs can be uploaded to complete the “Statement of Purpose” requirement (500 word limit)
    • Applicants should choose "International Affairs" as their preferred institute track
    • Check the CAA box in the "first heard" section of the application
  • Official transcript (mailed to the address listed below)
  • Two letters of recommendation from professors, deans or academic advisors (submitted through the online application system, fax or mail using the information below)
  • $45 application fee (must be submitted via credit card at the time of application submission or via check made out to The Fund for American Studies and sent to address below)

*Please note: CAA Fellowship applicants should use the 750 word limit instructions for the topical essay rather than those listed within the online application system.
