In the spring of 2004, Jamie Brown was named as Special Assistant
to the United States President for Legislative Affairs. The announcement
came after a series of promotions within the Department of Justice
including a September of 2003 appointment by Attorney General John
Ashcroft to Director and Advisor to the Attorney General. The position
also charges Brown with directing the Office of Intergovernmental
and Public Liaison at the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).
"Jamie's knowledge of the legislative process and her relationships
on Capitol Hill have proven invaluable in the Department's relations
with Congress. With her breadth of knowledge and experience she
will work to continue the unprecedented cooperation we have built
with our local and state law enforcement constituencies," said
Ashcroft.
In this role, Brown will head up the DOJ's efforts to inform and
engage state and local government, law enforcement, and other groups
and organizations. Previously, Brown worked for the Department of
Justice as Deputy Assistant, Acting Assistant and finally, Principal
Deputy Assistant Attorney General.
Brown credits TFAS for her extraordinary career in government affairs.
"The Institute plays an invaluable role in the lives of myriad
young people during one of the most important times in their lives.
The relationships I forged during my first week at ICPES have literally
guided the course of my career and my social life here in Washington,"
she said.
Brown began establishing vital career contacts in 1989 when she
interned for Sen. Connie Mack (R-FL) while attending the Engalitcheff
Institute. After graduating law school, she was hired full time
as Sen. Mack's Legislative Counsel where she served for three years.
She also worked for the law firm Verner, Liipfert, Bernhard, McPherson,
and Hand as Senior Associate of the Federal Affairs Legislative
Practice Group. She then moved on to the Department of Justice.
Brown is a member of the Alumni Council and the ICPES Board of
Visitors.
