Sample Intern Duties

The following are examples from past internships:

Jenna Anderson (Loyola Marymount University), intern at sanofi-aventis, monitored and analyzed legislative proposals, researched current public policy issues and covered congressional hearings. In addition, she attended a number of events and meetings where she represented sanofi-aventis, including think tank and policy briefings as well as trade and advocacy meetings.

Anita Fuchs (University of Nebraska-Lincoln), intern at the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, drafted media advisories, reviewed website plans, attended meetings with outside consultants and Hill staff, and researched tax and accounting issues.

Megan Korte (Kansas State University), intern at the National Council of Agricultural Employers, monitored issues in the media and summarized them for other staff. She also attended coalition meetings and White House briefings, while reporting to the Executive Vice President of NCAE. Megan worked with member relations, developed grassroots action calls, and attended hearings on Capitol Hill.

Drew Turner (University of Deleware), intern at the Associated General Contractors America, was given several large projects in addition to attending coalition meetings and congressional hearings. His work required him to use many government and private industry reports, the internet, and staff interviews. He helped create a new section of the website as well as the preliminary outline for a publication which will be completed and made available to federal, state, and local policy makers.

Carrie Moffet (DePaul University), intern at General Electric, researched and prepared a report on the US-India Nuclear Civilian Arms Cooperation, designed the template and completed documentation for lobbying budget reports, researched United States auto license registration laws and interviewed an NBC lobbyist on children's advertising. In addition, she was able to attend a number of industry events including healthcare hearings on Capitol Hill, meetings for GE's coalition with healthcare professionals, and fundraisers for candidates GE supported.

Sean Nesbitt (Norfolk State University), intern at Business Industry Political Action Committee (BIPAC), was responsible for researching media contacts and candidate information as well as corresponding with state, professional trade and other corporate members of the company. Sean also assisted in event planning, gathering and preparing marketing materials, updating databases and conducting some day to day clerical work.

Brian Wood (University of Virginia), intern at Aerospace Industries Association, had the opportunity to participate in research that is very important to the aerospace industry such as the U.S. - India Civil Nuclear Cooperation Initiative. Brian also attended relevant House and Senate hearings and prepared summaries of the proceedings.
