ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP SEMINAR
The optional Internship Seminar allows students to earn 3 credit hours for their internship experience in addition to the 6 hours of required core classes. This interactive seminar will enhance their experience in DC and provide professional skills necessary to succeed in the workplace. Although students have the choice to opt out of this course, most students consider it one of the most valuable and rewarding aspects of the Institute.
Students will attend the seminar for 1 ½ hours each week where they will examine the unique relationship between business and government. Students will integrate examples from their internships, workshops and group activities offered throughout the eight-week institute into the seminar. The course will look at current issues addressed in the students’ internships within business, lobbying and government affairs.
"[I learned] lobbying tactics that were practical; nuanced stories about government you cannot get in a textbook."
Andrew Christianson
University of South Dakota
Intern, National Ready Mixed Concrete Association
“I had an amazing experience that few officer-candidates get to have and I am convinced that what I have learned about leadership and our government will make me a better Air Force officer.”
Tony Paladino
United States Air Force Academy
Intern, National Federation of Independent Business
In addition to class time, students will participate in required co-curricular activities that will allow them to learn more about networking and being a professional in Washington, DC. These activities include:
- Orientation Session – During the first weekend students will participate in a half-day session that includes orientation, team building, and leadership development activities.
- Service – Students will participate in a service project to learn more about the pressing community needs of an urban area such as homelessness, hunger, environmental issues, domestic violence, and youth education.
- Leadership Workshop - Students will attend an additional mid-summer workshop on leadership development led by a professional leadership facilitator.
- Career Day – This event is a day of activities designed to give students an inside look at a number of career options and job searching techniques. Session topics include career planning, networking, tips on enhancing a resume, and interviewing skills. In addition, students may choose from a number of different panels to hear from professionals working in fields such as communications, politics, business and the nonprofit sector. Though open to all students, this event is a requirement of students taking the Internship Seminar.
“As a result of the course's debate, I learned a great deal more about immigration, but I also learned a great deal about legislation and the critical differences between the House and the Senate.”
Tania Jarjur
Duquesne University
Intern, National Federation of Independent Business
OBTAINING CREDIT FOR THE INTERNSHIP
In order for students to receive credit for their internship through Georgetown University, they must register for this component of the Institute. All students will be provided with an internship, even if they do not register for the seminar.
This course will be listed as an internship seminar on the student’s Georgetown University transcript. It is a graded course that incorporates required readings, written assignments, and tests. Students who satisfy all program requirements will receive 3 hours of course credit as well as special recognition at graduation.
It is the student’s responsibility to check with their home university regarding their specific policy for transferring internship credit.
ENROLLMENT
