Covering press conferences and reporting on congressional hearings are part of many internships. For approximately 30 hours a week, you will intern in a Washington public policy office. Sponsors include Capitol Hill offices, international organizations, federal agencies, political organizations, policy groups, think tanks, and law firms. The sooner you apply, the more likely you will get an internship in your specified area of interest, as summer internships in Washington, DC are very competetive.

The Institute staff will match you with an internship that best meets your interests and level of skill. The internships provide students with a firsthand look at the workings of the US economy and political system. Intern responsibilities vary, but often include covering congressional hearings, conducting research, coordinating events, managing databases, and writing for a newsletter or other publication.

You may arrange your own internship if it meets the requirements of the Institute. If there is a specific organization you would like to intern with, it is best to contact that office directly and apply as soon as possible in order to secure an internship for the summer.

Many students work for policy groups or trade associations as well as congressional offices.Summer 2003 Internships (Full list)
