Past Intern Sites

Alexandra Triana interned at the State Department under Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Capital Semester students intern at a variety of organizations and media outlets. Here are a few examples of past internship experiences.

Public Policy Track

  • Summit Health Institute for Research and Education
    Amanda Ciecior of Truman State University attended meetings on Capitol Hill and in other events around Washington on healthcare reform. She also helped plan and coordinate a major retreat, analyzed data on obesity, and conducted research on preventative measures.
  • European-American Business Council
    Thomas Koesters of Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich conducted policy research, gathered and organized news clippings, and participated in meetings with various member companies and government officials. He also helped evaluate the participation of member companies and identify key contacts for the EABC.
  • Office of U.S. Senator Mark Udall, (D-CO)
    Caitlin Frantz of the University of Colorado at Boulder worked in Senator Udall’s Washington, DC office where she worked with constituents by answering the phone, sorting main, and responding to constituent letters. She also attended congressional hearings and briefings and summarized important information for the legislative team.
  • Cato Institute, Department of Global Liberty and Prosperity
    Oscar Pfeffer of the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello performed research at a Washington, DC based think tank on various topics such as drug trafficking, government spending, and labor market trends. He also translated documents from Spanish to English, edited papers prior to publication, and scanned news sources daily for important issues relevant to Latin America.
  • Peace Corps, Finance Department
    Sarah Luongo of Washington University in St. Louis was part of a team analyzing the cost effectiveness of certain Peace Corps operations. She also helped write and edit claims reports.

  • The Climate Institute
    Mak Dukan of the Faculty of Economics and Business in Zagreb conducted a major research project on black carbon emissions from the industrial sector and processes to reduce these pollutants. He also published an article in the Climate Alert quarterly newsletter, titled “ Mitigating Industrial Black Carbon through Energy Recycling.”
  • U.S. Coast Guard, International Affairs
    With the U.S. Coast Guard, Chapman student Gabby DeMerie researched and drafted briefing materials for senior Coast Guard officers traveling throughout the Western Hemisphere. She also reviewed and prioritized foreign requests for U.S. Coast Guard training, scheduled and assisted in foreign visits, and drafted policy papers.
  • U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Consumer Litigation
    Bobby Long of Clemson University assisted a trial attorney within the Office of Consumer Litigation in ordering and reviewing various Grand Jury documents, bank records, and subpoenas that were integral resources in an ongoing fraud trial.

Political Journalism Track

Audrina Bigos at her internship, the sports department of WTTG Fox 5 News Channel.
  • NBC Nightly News, Investigative Unit
    Tracy Kennedy of Virginia Commonwealth University performed research for investigative and breaking news pieces. She also helped cover the House of Representatives and the Tea Party rallies the weekend health care reform was passed by congress.
  • Federal Times
    Ines Beatrix of Mcgill University covered news events, performed research, and reviewed press releases for Federal Times. She contributed weekly to their website, www.federaltimes.com, and also wrote several articles for the print edition.  
  • Gannett Washington Bureau
    Emily Holden from Louisiana State University worked with several different reporters on spot news and watchdog enterprise articles. She also gained experience working behind the camera covering a National Transportation Safety Board hearing for a New York local news station.
  • Hearst Newspapers, Houston Chronicle
    Diana Carlton of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte spent time on and off Capitol Hill covering press conferences, conducting interviews and attending briefings. She also worked with digital media taking photos, making videos, and editing the website.
  • ABC News
    Julie Percha of the University of Pittsburgh found her own internship with ABC. She primarily worked with the ABC News Now website, maintaining and posting on two separate blogs, assisting with investigative research and helping design the 2010 election page.  She also assisted with the in-studio daily webcast “Top Line” and created newsletters sent out to more than 50,000 subscribers daily.
  • MSNBC.com
    Maya Srikrishnan of the University of Texas at Austin worked with the MSNBC website, researching, editing, and uploading photos and video content to stories that came in over the wire.
  • Washington Times
    Casey Curlin of the University of Tennessee at Martin had the opportunity to write both feature and hard news stories. Her stories were featured in the Nation, Politics and Culture sections of the Washington Times.
  • Voice of America, Korean Division
    Jennifer Yoo of Biola University worked with reporters conducting research and obtaining sources for various stores. She also gained valuable experience attending editorial meetings with managing editors, editing radio features, and translating a variety of materials from Korean to English.
