Past Intern Sites

Alexandra Triana interned at the State Department under Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Capital Semester students intern at a variety of organizations and media outlets. Here are a few examples of past internship experiences.

Public Policy Track

  • Embassy of Peru
    While interning in the political department, Axel Angeles from the University of South Florida, translated official documents from Spanish to English, analyzed data, contacted government agencies, wrote summaries on current events and worked with the deputy chief of mission on national immigration projects.
  • National Taxpayers Union
    Andrew Alonso of Florida International University researched projects and wrote editorial pieces focused on tax and fiscal policy.
  • New Leaders for New Schools
    Danielle Campbell from Virginia Tech updated the weekly online newsletter and office wikipedia page. She also reviewed test scores and program applications, scheduled and attended first-round interviews and finalist selection day interviews, as well as worked with supervisors on new charter school projects.
  • Senate Finance Committee
    Adam Glasier of the University of Arkansas conducted research for preparations, took bills and amendments from the Committee Office to the Senate floor and assisted in writing legislation.
  • Office of Senator Ron Wyden (D-WY)
    Chapman University student, Alana Mounce, drafted constituent letters, sorted mail, attended hearings, watched floor proceedings and attended Hill briefings in addition to assisting staff in day-to-day operations.
  • Sporting Goods Manufacturing Association
    As part of the government affairs team, Brett Woods from the University of the Ozarks, conducted research, read insider trade news and wrote articles for members of the association. He also managed the database, website and attended congressional hearings.
  • U.S. Agency for International Development
    Aaron Miles of Wake Forest University coordinated outreach and special events through videoconferencing, networking and media relations.
  • U.S. Department of Education
    Diane Crow from the University of Arizona interned within the office of planning, evaluation & policy development. She was responsible for creating pages for the APEC wikipedia page, briefing senior officials after conducting research, attending congressional briefings, conferences and meetings.

Political Journalism Track

  • Aerospace Industries Association
    Kassidy Taylor from Keene State College worked within the communications department, writing articles and press releases for print and online publications, while participating in general departmental projects.
  • International Foundation for Election Systems
    As an intern with the communications department, Matthew Werner from Pennsylvania State University helped, facilitate the 2008 U.S. Election Program, compiled spreadsheets, attended meetings and copy edited for the communications editor and assisted the congressional liaison.
  • Politics Magazine
    Abigail Shaha of Brigham Young University wrote short briefs for the magazine and website, assisted in researching for larger pieces, wrote a larger pieces that was published and attended press conferences and events.
  • Street Sense
    Southern Nazarene University student, Alecia Peterson, from designed the newspaper layout, conducted interviews and wrote/edited stories.
  • WAMU 88.5
    Eilis O’Neil from Arizona State University produced two-four stories every week. This included pitching ideas, setting up and conducting interviews, conducting research, writing and voicing the stories and editing the final sound.
